What's New

Resplendent Apples
The apples in the fall of '07 have been copious and resplendent, in part due to favorable climate conditions but also owing to the efforts of orchardist Patrick Schafer. Schafer completed major pruning in 2006-07 of most of the apple trees in the Community Orchard. These well-established apples appear to have been planted more than fifty years ago, probably during the time that Charles Howard and Seabiscuit lived at Ridgewood. The orchard is dominated by golden and red delicious but also includes gravenstein and a few varieties that still need identification.

Pink-Hearted Peaches
We enjoyed a wonderful harvest of Indian Blood peaches this Fall. These peach trees were grown from seed by farmer Charles Martin at the nearby Golden Rule Garden and donated to the Project by Garden Manager Ellen Bartholomew. They were planted at the same time as the cherries in 2004.

New Trees
Project volunteers, under the guidance of our advisors Patrick Schafer and Charles Martin, will be planting new cherry rootstock in 2008, with plans to graft as well. We also are considering the introduction of some new fruit trees to the orchard mix, widening the harvest opportunities for the community.
